Résumé du colloque

There are many problems inherent in the teaching and learning of clinical skills and the paucity of studies addressing the efficacy of the various teaching methodologies is widely recognized. This comparative study explores the efficacy of two teaching strategies designed to assist baccalaureate students to learn to conduct a nursing neurological examination: a) a clinical experience in a hospital-based neurological unit, and b) a self-study demonstration practice program. A pretest posttest control group design was used to conduct the study. Although the findings are not statistically significant, an increased knowledge of neurological assessment was in the direction hypothesized. The self-study demonstration practice program and the clinical experience in neurological nursing appear to be close to equivalent in increasing knowledge related to neurological assessment.
