Absorption Spectrum of Free CH3 and CD3 Radicals

By means of the flash photolysis technique CH3 radicals were produced from dimethylmercury, acetaldehyde and azomethane and CD3 radicals from deuterated dimethylmercury. The absorption spectrum immediately after photodecomposition was taken with a 3 meter vacuum spectrograph in the region 2000 to 1300 A. A Rydberg series of bands was observed which converges to the known ionization potential of CH3. The structure of the spectrum suggests strongly that the CH3 radical is nearly planar or planar in the ground state.
