Résumé de la communication

Having spent 22 years in the United States (1967-91), this participant proposes to outline his experiences as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota (1967-72), as an Assistant Professor at Cleveland State University (1972-76) and as President and CEO of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies in Philadelphia (1979-91). Since this observer had always wanted to return to Canada to teach at some university, but could not find such employment in Canada, he accepted employment in the USA as it presented itself. When finally offered a teaching position at the University of Ottawa in 1991, this Canadian faced the difficult choice of either staying in a high-paying and high-prestige job, or returning to a lower-paying and less prestigious position in Canada. To help him (and his wife) to make this difficult decision, the author drafted a list of “Advantages and Disadvantages of Living in the USA and Canada, Based Upon a Scale of 1 to 10 for certain, Selected Criteria.” He also drafted a list of “Advantages and Disadvantages of Non-Profit Leadership versus Academic Life,” pertaining to his current and future job. Both Canada and the Academic Life scored higher than the USA or Non-Profit. Therefore, the author, his wife, and two sons returned to Canada to start anew in 1992. Even though the transition to Canadian life and employment was difficult, and they still dislike the cold winters, they have few regrets. The author will share his lists with the audience.
