Résumé du colloque

Intensive monitoring of the thermal regime of the snow cover and the near-surface layers of the ground is underway at a woodland site near Schefferville, Quebec. The monitoring employs a datalogging system with enhanced capacity for detailed monitoring of temporal and spatial variations in ground and snow temperatures. A mobile probe system is used for detailed spatial surveys at different times during the winter. Preliminary results show that snow is colder in a shaded and/or shallow snow cover and warmer in a deeper snow cover. Effective thermal conductivities in the range of 0.05 to 0.35 Wm-1K-1 were obtained for snow densities of 0.15 to 0.37 g cm-3. It was noticed that temperatures at the snow-ground interface varied spatially through a wider range for sites observed in early and mid-winter than in early spring. The average temperature at the interface was 1.3 °C lower in early winter than in mid-winter, and 0.6 °C lower in mid-winter than in early spring.
