Résumé du colloque

This paper presents an overview of electrode erosion in plasma torches. Emphasis will be given in the experimental results obtained in the laboratories, using concentric copper electrodes simulating an industrial plasma torch. The parameters used during the experimental program were: Plasma gases - Ar, H2, N2, N2/H2, NH3, O2, CH4, H2S and mixtures of these gases; Arc current - between 100 and 1000 A; Magnetic field strength (to move the arc) - between 10 and 1500 G. The experiments were conducted in a test chamber at atmospheric pressure. A physical model was developed based on these results and others available in the literature. Numerical simulations of the erosion model were performed; the results from the simulations compare well with the experimental results. Possible areas of future research in electrode erosion will be highlighted.
