Assigning structures to ions in the gas phase

Résumé du colloque

In the past five years it has become possible to assign structures to ions with confidence, especially when available experimental methods are used in concert. This area has been the subject of a recent review. In addition, high level ab initio molecular orbital theory calculations are now capable of accurately predicting the stabilities of a wide range of small ions (of say, up to 15 atoms). This has stimulated the experimental search for ions of high unconventional structure which calculations have predicted to be observable species in the gas phase. These matters will be reviewed with particular regard to their significance for the interpretation of mass spectra. Some novel mass spectrometric methods for the study of neutral species will also be described.
