Between the verbal description and geometric modeling of design: A magic or a reality?

The computer technology have provided us a great opportunity to record and evolve a design on a modeling system rather than on a paper. However, to adopt a modeling system as an integral part of a design process, the state-of-the-art where a modeling system is usually employed as a drafting system must be surpassed and the problems such as the evolvement and the change of design which is embodied in a design development must be solved. To address the issues, we propose a topological approach of design modeling, in which the evolvement and change occurred in a course of design is allowed. A model of design is established for a change to take place at any step of design process. An experiment is demonstrated to reveal the approach proposed. The research makes a significant contribution towards the automation of design, meanwhile it allows for the growth and modification of design model.
