The phenomenon of diffuse reflection and transmission in dense multiply scattering media is encountered in many areas of scientific and industrial investigations, from testing and quality control of papers and paints to reflection spectroscopy of crystalline powders. In most of these investigations the scattering media are assumed to be homogeneous, and the standard Kubelka-Munk theory is invoked to interpret the experimental results. We have extended the theory to consider the variation of concentration of the scattering and the absorbing particles along the depth of the sample. A few explicit solutions will be presented and discussed.
