Résumé du colloque

In Finland, peasants have traditionally owned the bulk of forests, and therefore the opening of Finland in the 19th century into the world market through forestry was felt profoundly, but with great regional variations, among the agrarian population, depending on the strength of the landowning peasant class and on the role of the timber companies. Also in present-day Finland, the linkage of the forestry to the social structures is of utmost importance. Forestry plays an essential part in the economic activities of Finnish farmers. In the poorest regions, the mechanization of the forestry has caused unemployment and extensive out-migration, thereby exacerbating regional inequalities.
