Résumé du colloque

Vacuum pyrolysis of wood yields approximately 50% by weight of oils, 23% charcoal, 16% pyrolytic water and 11% gas. This oil typically contains 5-10% organic acids, 5-10% sugars, 10-25% oxygenated aromatic compounds with moderate to high polarity and 30-45% high polar and partially polymeric compounds. The process economics greatly improve if the valuable chemicals which are found in this oil can be extracted and sold as by-products together with the fuel oil and charcoal. Preliminary laboratory analytical results showed that wood pyrolysis oils contain various valuable rare and commodity chemicals depending on the wood source material. Hardwood, for example, yielded significant quantity of low molecular weight carboxylic acids (formic and acetic in particular). Bark oil yielded significant quantities of phenolic and oxygenated compounds that other feedstocks. The objective of this project is to investigate a technology for the separation and purification of rare chemicals from biomass vacuum pyrolysis oils. Pyrolysis oils were fractionated using a Liquid Chromatography (LC) method and the oils were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Small scale sub-fractionation of the pyrolysis oils was successfully conducted. The oils were first separated into five fractions using a prefractionation technique prior to performing the LC separation prep. HPLC results. Under optimal separation conditions, some chemicals with a purity in excess of 90% were obtained. The use of solvents and silica gel was also experimented.
