Résumé du colloque

The German literary scene of the 1970's and 1980's saw a flood of autobiographical texts by known and unknown German authors. At a time when Germans were reflecting on their collective past, a significant number of German and Austrian writers explored their personal past, focusing on their fathers as contemporaries of the Nazi period. While it is not unusual that individuals at a certain stage in life try to come to terms with their parents' generation, it would however seem that this generation conflict if the parents' integrity is in doubt. In this paper I will explore four German and Austrian authors' occupation with their fathers' involvement in the Third Reich. The works studied are: Die Kleine Figur meines Vaters by Peter Henisch, Mitteilungen an den Adel by Elisabeth Plessen, Der Mann auf der Kanzel by Ruth Rehmann, and Abschied by Christoph Meckel. My paper also attempts to examine these works for their significance as autobiographical and as fictional texts.
