GeoDF: An Innovative Approach to Online Participatory Planning

Online Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS) is an emerging tool for enabling online participatory planning due to its powerful spatial data handling capabilities. Recent efforts in PPGIS concentrate primarily on making the tools available and accessible to the general public without paying much attention to addressing the communication and discussion needs of the spatially-related discussion environment. This research highlighted the significance of communication needs in PPGIS research. It formalized and implemented the concept of spatial context in a prototype known as "GIS-enabled Online Discussion Forum" (GeoDF) such that participants’ opinions could be communicated explicitly and efficiently during spatially-related discussions. In this presentation, the speaker will discuss the following: the nature of this approach, how GeoDF helps to bridge the communication gap in online participatory planning, and the challenges.

Il s'agit en fait du lancement de de la série des forums annuels Villes Régions Monde (Forum VRM) sur les approches théoriques et méthodologiques innovantes en études urbaines La première édition de cet événement sera l’occasion de présenter le réseau Villes Régions Monde qui existe depuis sept ans et compte plusieurs réalisations. Nous présenterons la programmation à venir et plus particulièrement, l’ambition du Forum sur les méthodologies innovantes en matière de développement des études urbaines et régionales.
