This presentation will provide a broad context examining key issues around Indigenous Peoples and the mining sector, with a focus on South America. It will touch on relevant international human rights instruments, discuss a variety of international initiatives relevant to Indigenous Peoples and the extractives sector, and briefly reflect on Canada’s recent national roundtable process on mining in developing countries. The presentation will also highlight Indigenous perspectives on appropriate means of involving them in decision-making around projects and plans affecting their territories, drawing on a research programme currently underway at The North-South Institute in collaboration with Indigenous organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada. Specific case studies will be used to ground the presentation and subsequent discussion.

Dialog bénéficie d’une subvention d’infrastructure du Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC) et, suite à l’obtention d’une subvention CRSH dans le cadre du programme « Réseau stratégiques de connaissances » au concours de 2007, le regroupement procède présentement à la mise en œuvre de ce réseau élargi. Le colloque sera l’occasion de rassembler les membres, de souligner l’expansion de l’infrastructure de Dialog et de créer de nouveaux partenariats.
