Résumé de la communication

Integrated microsystems are increasingly playing an important role in our social wellbeing and economic growth and development. The growing numbers of aging population and rising rates of chronic diseases continue to be a major health problem in Canada leading to enormous healthcare costs. Although a cure for chronic diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and stroke would be an ideal solution but remains elusive, thus other options can be considered that can still have a large impact on the course of the disease. This presentation will cover some of the ongoing research activities in the Sensor Microsystems group at McGill in the area of minimally invasive point-of-care sensors. We will also describe research in the area of monitoring nosocomial infections (infections acquired in hospitals) due to bacterial pathogens and the development of general purpose field-usable biochemical sensors. Finally, we will describe research activities in developing silicon neural prosthetic systems that can help paralyzed patients regain motor abilities to communicate with the outside world.
