Résumé du colloque

Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) is a gram-positive soil bacterium characterized by its ability to produce crystalline inclusions during sporulation which consist of proteins exhibiting highly specific insecticidal activity. Crystals produced by B.t. var. kurstaki, var. israelensis and var. tenebrionis are toxic to Lepidoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera respectively. There are, however, no pesticidal bacteria toxic against plant bugs (Anthropoda: Insecta: Hemiptera) or slugs (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata), very serious pests in cotton, fruits and vegetables in North America. Consequently, we undertook a screening program for pesticidal bacteria from dead plant bugs and slugs. As a result, several bacteria were isolated. They showed a protein patterns different from previously known B.t.. Morphological analysis by electron microscopy, determination of plasmid profile and bio-assays against plant bugs and slugs are in progress.
