Résumé du colloque

The celebrated book, The Great Transformation (1946), by the economic historian, Karl Polanyi, analysed the entry of British society into the era of industrial capitalism and the impact of the market economy on the human community and the land. In my research I wish to clarify Polanyi's theory of the origin of the ecological crisis. Polanyi argued that already towards the end of 19th century, British society produced a counter-movement that sought to protect the human community and, to some extent, the natural environment. The debate regarding the origin of the ecological crisis has practical importance since any strategy to overcome this crisis will have to relate itself to its origin.
