Résumé du colloque

I will begin by outlining the productivity gains available through individual pieces of computerized technology -- e.g., robots, ZSX and word processors, 35% -- as well as through the integration of this technology into flexible manufacturing systems (in factories) and management information systems (in banks, offices etc.) -- between 100 and 300 % gains in productivity. I will then review the social impacts of this -- including the numbers and occupational mix of jobs affected. I will discuss not only the individual winners and loser (systems analysts, welders, secretaries and office managers; men and women; white collar and blue collar) but also about regional and national winners and losers, touching on the local implications of the emerging global division of labour. I will end by suggesting some of what I consider to be the necessary conditions (including educational conditions) for an alternative to what appears to be the scenario of the future: a technology-driven/ technology-dominated society that promises meaningful employment and participation for only a few and un- or under-employment and participation for the majority and an unhealthy polarization between the two groups.
