Résumé du colloque

Through seven centuries, St. Peter of Morrone - or Pope Celestine V - has been widely known not so much for his true personality or numerous accomplishments but rather what has been said about one single act. His resignation from the papal throne on December 13, 1294 has effectively overshadowed his sixty years as a hermit, his foundation of a large Benedictine congregation, and his prodigious thaumaturgica talents. My aim is not to examine the man whom many commentators on the Divina Commedia would consider to be "colui che fece per viltade il gran rifiuto", but rather the extant representations of Peter as a saint of the church. I shall determine the contents of the late medieval hagiographical dossier of Peter with the aim of revealing the intentions of the authors of the various Celestinian vitae.
