Résumé du colloque

In his book entitled Initiation aux auteurs cisterciens, Père R. Thomas lists and discusses thirteen men as "les Pères" of the Cistercian Order. The variety of these men's nationalities bears witness to the Order's vitality and its significance for the whole of western Christendom. Of these Fathers, one was of Italian origin, one was Flemish, four were French and seven were Anglo-Norman. The significance of the contribution of this latter group has been recognized, but not examined at great length. There exist only a handful of articles which deal with these "English" Cistercian spiritual masters as a group and only one which touches upon the presence of the Rule of St Benedict in some of these Fathers. Furthermore, none of these works draws in the views of the most important of all Anglo-Norman Fathers, St Stephen Harding. The aim of this paper is to briefly but systematically examine these Fathers' teachings concerning the Rule, and how these teachings relate to their general views of monastic spirituality. The shared opinions of these men will be studied in order to determine whether or not, there exists a particularly Anglo-Norman Cistercian view of the Rule.
