Résumé du colloque

Over the last three years, the Cree of the Eastern James Bay region have implemented Cree as a language of instruction in four of the nine communities served by the Cree School Board of Québec. The twenty-year process which has led to this situation, including the requirements of orthography standardization, provision of a dictionary, language and pedagogical training, suitable curriculum material, and community, parental, and administrative support will be reviewed. The readers, teachers' guides, and support materials used in the program will be presented, along with an evaluation of the first year of the Grade One program. The process of revision of the 1987 East Cree lexicon and its suitability for elementary teachers as a resource document will be discussed. Other lexicons recently published for Naskapi and an Ontario Cree dialect will be presented. The necessity of a computerized lexical database, which allows for the printing of a number of smaller topical lexicons and lists of resource words, rather than just a single comprehensive lexicon, as well as a pedagogically oriented grammar to serve as a basis for ongoing teacher training, will be stressed.
