Calcifying cardiopathies were induced by the administration of paraphenylenediamine and of plasmocid as well as by surgical occlusion of coronary veins, in the rat. In all these cases, the intensity of myocardial calcification, unlike the onset of necrosis, was greatly enhanced by parathyroidectomy. On the other hand, the aggravating action of parathyroid deficiency was counteracted by simultaneous thyroidectomy, and the administration of thyroxine offered no replacement value in this respect. It was also observed that the administration of dihydrotachysterol, a well known calcifying agent, can actually prevent myocardial calcification in both intact and parathyroidectomized animals. An interpretation of these findings will be presented, together with the results of electrolyte determinations.
