Medicalization at the Century's End

Résumé du colloque

For the past two decades social scientists and medical critics have examined the breadth and depth of the medicalization of human problems. Medicalization tends to be of two types: of deviance and of "normal life events". We see different degrees of medicalization for different problems, from complete to partial medicalization, and, in specific cases, virtual demedicalization. In terms of categories, medicalization still seems to be increasing, even in the context of constraining social forces. The emergence of the "new genetics" and changes in health care systems may have a significant impact on medicalization in the next decade. Based on current trends, we can envision shifts in medicalization as we enter the 21st century.
