Résumé du colloque

Producer services linked to transport are one of Montreal’s most important economic sectors. They represent a major group of tertiary-quaternary businesses for which Montreal still possesses some advantage over Toronto. The size and scale of Montreal’s service industry is a reflection in part of the city’s historical and strategic role as a multi-modal transportation centre. This paper begins by identifying some of the salient features of the service sector. It describes the enormous contrasts in the size of individual firms, and highlights the main intra-urban locational patterns. The paper goes on to analyse the impacts of recent changes, particularly in the organisation of trade, and in the penetration of foreign firms in the service sector.
