Résumé du colloque

In the last 10 years an increasing number of nurses have been leaving their job, thus creating a serious problem for nursing management. The purpose of this study was to identify which factors affect nurses working in a Friesen Concept hospital. Herzberg's two factor theory of motivation served as the theoretical framework with the inclusion of specific characteristics addressing the particular structural design. The study was conducted by survey method. Of the 578 questionnaires distributed, 203 (38.3%) were returned. A Pearson correlation showed a significant relationship between productivity and satisfaction. All factors retained from the model were rated as being highly important. The factor "Design" developed to measure satisfaction with the specific characteristic of the Friesen Concept had one of the lowest level of satisfaction. However, the mean score for each factor indicated that the employees were, in general, moderately satisfied with their work situation. Nursing personnel working in some programs were less satisfied in regard to recognition, policy and work conditions. Discussion will address strategies to increase nursing satisfaction.
