Résumé du colloque

Continuous monitoring of the seismically active Charlevoix zone has been carried out with the aid of a 6 stations microearthquake seismic array since late 1977. A large set of existing data may be used to obtain the focal mechanism of these microearthquakes. Up to now, only a limited amount of focal mechanism have been reported. Recently, a variety of numerical experiments on the inversion of synthetic seismograms demonstrated that focal mechanisms can be determined accurately with data from a few seismic stations providing proper azimuthal coverage. We selected waveform data from events with good azimuthal coverage of stations around the Charlevoix seismic zone to derive the focal mechanisms. The results show that (1) focal mechanisms of the microearthquakes (0 ≤ M ≤ 3.4) can be determined individually by synthetic seismogram inversion, (2) for a majority of the earthquakes the focal mechanism show thrust faulting or a combination of thrust/strike-slip faulting with a north-south direction of compression. There is no dominant trend for the strike and dip of the fault plane.
