Pedagogical Interaction in Classrooms of Quebec Aboriginals

This presentation will report on ethnographic research conducted in Inuit, Mohawk, and Algonquin communities of Quebec. The studies contrast the classroom discourse of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers. Coded transcriptions of classroom interactions as well as teacher interview data were analyzed in these studies. This presentation will describe teachers' ideologies and classroom behaviour in terms of cultural congruity and cultural misunderstandings. A theoretical construct on Aboriginal pedagogy will be presented.
