Résumé du colloque

Although chiropractic has formally been in existence for 101 years, nearly all of its history of significant and reproducible research has been compressed within the past 20. The past 5 years of research have been particularly prominent in securing recognition of chiropractic health care as (1) one of the first-line means of healthcare intervention in the treatment of conditions beyond low-back pain, as suggested in several emerging studies and under consideration by several third-party payors as a means of providing more effective and economical managed health care. As confirmed in the discussions of recent formal chiropractic research agenda assessments, including FCER's own First International Workshop to Develop a Chiropractic Research Agenda in Bournemouth, U.K., in October 1996, productive research has been witnessed in six major areas. These are: (1) research design, including qualitative and quantitative research and instruments for evaluation; (2) outcomes research, including techniques and safety; (3) clinically oriented fundamental research; (4) psychosocial aspects; (5) educational research; and (6) public healthcare issues, including epidemiological considerations, cost-effectiveness, ergonomics, and the development of practice standards, guidelines and audit criteria.
