Résumé de la communication

The Swedish policy for development cooperation 2010-2014 stresses the need to strengthen and develop scientific research in developing countries as a means for strategically combating poverty. ISP is devoted to building capacity for scientific research and higher education in developing countries, since 1961 in the field of physics and since 1970 and 2001 in chemistry and mathematics, respectively. Addressing development challenges becomes increasingly complex – and also urgent. For future, sustainable development, it is imperative for the global society, including the developing world to have a sufficient resource base of scientifically well-educated scholars at all levels, who undertake critical scientific research contributing to the knowledge needed to address the pertinent challenges of today and the future. Applied and interdisciplinary research is most important in solving the challenges facing us today. However, as stated by the Swedish Research Council a few years ago, “there is no strong interdisciplinary research without strong disciplines”. Without a base for science, it is hardly possible to attempt to develop interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research of more applied importance. The basic sciences physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics form the pillars on which applied sciences and engineering are built, and it is most important that these fields are sufficiently strong in developing countries to facilitate research of more immediate importance.
