The study of economic and social conditions in Serbia under the long Ottoman domination has been neglected mainly because of the lack of pertinent sources. For that reason, it is necessary to use auxiliary disciplines for help in our efforts to give a more complete picture of the past in these terms. Since family names are a product and expression of a civilization to some extent, an attempt is made here towards an interpretation of the Serbian family names of Osmanli origin in order to see how much they can contribute to our knowledge of the life of the Serbian people under the Turks.
