Résumé du colloque

Different regions of the world have different geomorphologic characteristics. This, therefore, means that measurements of certain hydrological variables of other regions may not be directly applied to other areas. As the result, any successful hydrological experiment conducted in one place may not conclusively imply success elsewhere. Two simple methods have demonstrated that surface run-off water has contributed to stream flow or increased in water level. These methods have limitation to when rain storms from tropical convective clouds are occurring both over head the river and also within the vicinity. The first method involves rainfall that has fallen in areas where no gauging stations or hydrometeorological data exist. In this case outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) taken as a measure of deep tropical convection is used in estimation rainfall distributed from convective clouds. Second method involves the use of cold cloud duration (CCD) images captured from meteosat rainfall is deduced from threshold values. Hence, hydrological variables are estimated through interpolation method taking into account of spatial distribution whose dependence is on meteorological conditions. Since, there is relationship in variability of rainfall over this region with both OLR and CCD it is therefore possible to use OLR and CCD to predict spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall. In the process of determining surface run off, there should be prior knowledge of soil and vegetation types as well as soil physical properties which dictate drainage system. Computation using techniques can be made on either 24 hours basis or 10 days basis.
