Résumé de la communication

What are some of the epistemological engagements that come with terms like the transnational or with an emphasis on diaspora in North American or hemispheric approaches to race? My test cases here will be instances of black diasporic writing that negotiates the US-Canada border. I will look in particular at texts produced in the mid-19th century when large numbers of African Americans became (temporarily) African Canadians fleeing the impact of United States slavery and in particular of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. What are the advantages and perils, the benefits and costs, of looking at these cultural productions in the perspectives of competing current theorizations of cultural belonging?
