Syntactic Red Herrings versus Semantic Markers - a major problem of translation didactics

One of the structural idiosyncrasies of the German language is the extended modifier-attribute that can only in exceptional cases be literally translated into English and French. But it often forms the semantic nucleus, being a kind of mini-skopos (Vermeer, 1978: 1983). When transforming it into secondary clauses, students have great difficulty distinguishing between syntactic functionality and semantic direction. I shall present a few didactic strategies that demonstrate these two functions with selected examples.
