Résumé du colloque

Although certain general tendencies have been indicated by phoneticians for the position of stress in English, Jones' admission has been generally accepted that "there are no rules determining which syllables of polysyllabic English words bear the main stress." The foreign student is obliged to learn the stress of each word individually. During the past year Chomsky and Halle working together at M.I.T. have formulated a set of rules governing the position of stress in English. The rules are ordered and are applied either once only or, where required, in cycles.
