Résumé du colloque

One hundred and thirty-five children between the ages of two and eight years coming for elective surgery in the Day Surgery Department participated in a study in which they were either held by a parent for the induction of anesthesia or were induced in the usual manner with staff but without parents in the room. Measures of child and parental anxiety, both self-reported and observed, were taken once before, at the time of induction, right after, one and four weeks after surgery. While there were no main effects, factors such as preoperative anxiety and age of child predict who does well with parental holding. Policies in Paediatric Day Surgery Departments are implicated.
