Since as a result of the totalitarian state system all spheres of life, including education and sciences, in the U.S.S.R. have been indoctrinated, a divergency arose in those countries between the official doctrine enforced by the state's interference on the one hand and independence as well as free development of human thought on the other. This brought about the decline of the humanities. Pure and technical sciences, comparatively less accessible to indoctrination, remained more independent in their development. As a result, the situation arose that pure sciences and technology overpowered the humanities and this symbolizes a very essential Communist point of view according to which matter is life from which the spirit has been banished.
