Résumé du colloque

From this work, it seems that iron is not required as a separate constituent present in salt mixture. In fact, the larval growth is similar in both the case of insects fed on a diet containing iron salt and lacking in it. But from the analysis of various materials used in the synthetic diet, it appears that perhaps traces of iron present in these materials are sufficient to support growth and development of this insect at different stages. The presence of iron in the larvae themselves points to this fact. We, therefore, agree in our conclusion with some other workers who have already suggested that iron is a constituent of heme nuclei in the cytochromes of all insects and the hemoglobin of those few insects in which hemoglobin occurs.
