Résumé du colloque

1,345 eels from 190mm to 978mm were obtained from 31 sampling areas, from Newfoundland to Trinidad. Among 173 males, the largest measures only 357mm, while the females being much larger. Although females were taken in brackish and salt water, their principle growing areas are found in fresh water. Among many thousands of eels examined in Quebec fisheries, only one male (255mm) was found at Barachois, on November 17, 1956. The males typically grow in brackish or salt water. It appears that male eels are more numerous in southern areas, such as Georgia, Louisiana and Florida, while the females are abundant in Ontario, Quebec and the Canadian Maritime Provinces, where they supported an important fishery.
