Résumé de la communication
Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is becoming increasingly popular as a means for managing health among those living with a chronic health condition such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis). Use of CAM may be particularly helpful for these individuals because it may increase feelings of control over health which are known to enhance quality of life in this population. Although the use of CAM among people with IBD is well documented there has been less attention to the links between CAM use and psychological health and well-being among those with IBD. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest findings on how CAM use may play a role in the health and well-being of people with IBD. Using a prospective correlational design, 155 people with IBD completed an online survey initially (Time 1) and 6 months later (Time 2) that included measures of psychological well-being, health status, and perceived control over health. 43% indicated that they were current CAM users with massage therapy and chiropractic the two most used CAM modalities. Although there were no differences in perceived health status between the CAM user and non-user groups, CAM users reported significantly lower levels of stress, and higher levels of hope, perceived control over health and psychological well-being at both Time 1 and Time 2. These results support the notion that CAM use may be one way to support the psychological health and well-being
