Résumé du colloque

Western red cedar (Thuja plicata), an important timber tree in B.C., is presently only partially utilized for commercial purposes. The foliage (needles, twigs) often constituting 20-30% by weight of the tree, is removed by burning. This "slash" component is an important source of chemicals (90% of Western red cedar oil is thujone), which through appropriate basic research, can be converted to commercially important products. This strategy would clearly encourage industry to employ the "slash" for beneficial purposes and additional economic benefit. The lecture will illustrate the use of the chiral synthon, thujone, for the synthesis of agricultural and forest chemicals (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, anti-feedants, juvenile hormones), perfumery and cosmetic products and pharmaceutical drugs.
