Résumé de la communication
This communication addresses the critiques of economic determinism and reductionism that are generally addressed to Marxism. Whereas it accepts the charges made towards structural and analytic Marxism, it argues that such critiques cannot be generalized to the rich body of Marxist literature, more specifically the tradition of political Marxism. It claims that Marxist Historical Sociology (MHS) have thus far developed many methodological and conceptual insights that open the way for a non-reductionist social theorization of change which can be invaluable for IR. After positively reviewing the contributions made by this body of literature to the development of a Materialist Historical Sociology of IR, it raises some of the issues that have yet remained insufficiently explored by this body of literature. More specifically, it claims that MHS would gain to move beyond the dichotomy pre-capitalist vs. capitalist social relations in order to specify the multifaceted ways in which social contentions and social conflicts are mediated through specific institutions at different spatial levels. Thus far, MHS has developed typology of process of social change centered upon the French and English cases. It claims that MHS must go beyond this typology to fully explore one of its central claims that social change must be understood and explained as a process; a process more specifically understood on the basis of institutionally and historically specific balance of class forces and power.
