Résumé du colloque
When translation experts deal with translation theories, methods, practice etc., they usually stress at some point, the importance of "external factors" (Ch. Krag 1992) to render a text into a satisfactory translation product. Three factors contribute to increased comprehension of the source text and therefore translating competence: 1) a solid basis of general knowledge (Weltkenntnisse); 2) socio-cultural awareness and 3) specific skills and interests on the part of the translator. Although these statements seem obvious, it must be stressed that the students of translation should be made aware of this. Who is this message best conveyed to them in order for them to see its implications for their own work? The best way to do this is to use realistic illustration to which they can relate. For this purpose, I have developed a class demonstration for beginners which I like to call the "Day-to-their" experiment. It deals with the translation from English into German and shows how consequential it is to fully understand not only concepts, but also concrete and seemingly familiar terms before they can be rendered correctly into the target language. It also teaches the consequences of misunderstandings, mainly an inaccurate or wrong translation, often with humour.
