Résumé de la communication

Translation and theatre – these are two cultural phenomena, which have very much in common. Robert Wechsler called translation “performing without a stage”. They both represent two sides of the same creative processes – interpretation and transformation. Translation and theatre, especially when they act together, help minimize the cultural distance, which exists between any two cultures. In my presentation I intend to concentrate on the history of translation and re-translation of a play that has won world-wide fame – La Cage aux folles, which will allow to examine and compare the relationship between the translated text, the target audience, and the final production. I will analyze different versions of La Cage aux folles in the source country – France and two target societies: American and German. Comparing four different versions of the play, I will show how translation or – in some cases – non-translation of the theatre text can become a reflection of the social, political, cultural tendencies of the source and the target societies By discussing and comparing the history of this play in different countries I will also try to answer the question often faced by theatre translators: whom to “serve”: the writer or the audience?
