Résumé du colloque

The study area is located within the discontinuous permafrost zone in the southeastern sector of Ungava Bay. Permafrost occurs in patches of heaved terrain dominated by unfrozen zones. The selected site located in a fluvialglacial basin is instrumented with thermistors across a mound for the data needed for heat transfer equation. A finite difference computer program was used to solve the heat conduction equation under certain boundary conditions. The objective of this study is to model time-varying heat conduction in fine silty sand. The programs used are able to handle convective, constant heat flux, specified temperature and type of boundaries. Finite differences are commonly used in the numerical solution of partial differential equations. This is best illustrated by constructing a finite difference grid. In this study, the grid is set up in two dimensions to model heat conduction. The two dimensions represent spatial independent variables, x and z. For each node, the temperature and material properties are assumed uniform for the region represented. By specifying the initial temperature at each node, the nodal, thermal properties and the boundary conditions, the heat conduction equation can be solved to predict the temperatures of this node at a later time.
