Résumé du colloque

In the U.S., as in all industrialized countries, there are seeking ways to reduce the generation of hazardous substances and treat or contain those hazardous materials already in the environment. When the U.S. Congress reauthorized "Superfund", our primary legal authority for studying and cleaning up hazardous wastes, they provided for a program of university-based research centers, to be distributed equitably around the country, which would perform exploratory research on key issues needed to develop effective, economic, and, if possible, permanent solutions to hazardous substance problems. Several features of the program are new for research centers sponsored by the U.S. government. These include a requirement for substantial matching contributions from the recipients, training and technology transfer to supplement the research, and coordinated efforts among all five of the centers and other institutions which are similarly engaged. We have high hopes for the program's success.
