Résumé de la communication

This presentation describes the use of choice-based conjoint analysis (CBC) to examine environmental attributes relevant to older people’s preferences for neighbourhood open spaces. The use of CBC analysis is set up against the background of the I’DGO (Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors) research project. I’DGO aims to investigate the mechanisms by which quality of neighbourhood environment affect the health and psychological well-being of older people. Sawtooth software was used to design a CBC questionnaire based on a partial design. This involved 15 attributes (e.g., traffic; tree/plants) each taking up to 4 levels with 14 paired comparisons tasks per respondent. For each task, participants were asked to compare the two parks and to choose the one they would prefer as their local open space. A sample of 237 older people took part in the study. The analyses included the estimation of relative importances by the use of logit analysis and the use of the Market Simulator to examine tradeoffs among environmental attributes. This paper presents overall results and discusses the use of conjoint analysis as a useful method in preference research. It also discusses how findings based on this method can help understand the trade off between competing environmental attributes and help those involved in the design of outdoor environments.
