Résumé du colloque

Thermal decomposition of Cr2O3 has been studied in the homogeneous gas phase, the solid oxide was melted in a tungsten crucible, the oxide vapors being then transported into an Argon plasma for further decomposition. A plasma torch was coupled with an induction coil to reach 5.3 MHz generator. Solid reaction products were collected along the reactor length and analyzed by wet chemical analysis as well as X-Ray diffraction, IR-Absorption and SEM. Local metallic Cr concentrations as high as 20 wt % were found in the deposits and an average RF coil local oxide conversion into metal being higher than 50%. The products of semi-amorphous nature have been identified as agglomerated submicron particles (size below 100 nm). Reaction temperatures exceeding 5000 K were recorded below the coupling coil by spectroscopic method. The results show that homogeneous systems overcome the drawbacks of typical heterophase plasma processing, advantages being higher reaction efficiency and simplified model's treatment.
