In his book entitled Initiation aux auteurs cisterciens, Père R. Thomas lists and discusses thirteen men as "les Pères" of the Cistercian Order. The variety of these men's nationalities bears witness to the Order's vitality and its significance for the whole of western Christendom. Of these Fathers, one was of Italian origin, one was Flemish, four were French and seven were Anglo-Norman. The significance of the contribution of this latter group has been recognized, but not examined at great length.
