It is now becoming apparent that molecules having π-orbitals have a highly directed force field, although such molecules are usually considered to be non-polar. The π-orbital exhibits a definite 'donor' property relative to acceptor molecules such as hydrogen chloride. In order to investigate the donor nature of π-orbitals in olefinic, acetylenic and aromatic compounds, freezing point diagrams of a series of such compounds with hydrogen chloride were carried out.
