Materialism is a frequent issue in the Meditations and the Objections and Replies to the Meditations, a constant undercurrent to the discussion. In my talk I would like to explore some aspects of Descartes’ reactions to these materialists. My thesis is that it was his response to materialism that in good part forced Descartes to make a major shift in his thought. I will claim that certain crucial aspects of his doctrine of substance may have come directly out of his confrontation with materialism in the Objections and Replies to the Meditations.
