This paper aims at critically assessing the theoretical contributions made by these scholars regarding the issue of social and historical change. This communication addresses the critiques of economic determinism and reductionism that are generally addressed to Marxism. Whereas it accepts the charges made towards structural and analytic Marxism, it argues that such critiques cannot be generalized to the rich body of Marxist literature, more specifically the tradition of political Marxism. It claims that Marxist Historical Sociology (MHS) have thus far developed many methodological and conceptual insights that open the way for a non-reductionist social theorization of change which can be invaluable for IR.
